Adults - Pick of the Week

Cover Art
Home Front - Kristin Hannah
ISBN: 0312577206
Kristin Hannah has once again crafted a complex family drama story that will make you cry. Michael and Jolene’s marriage is in crisis when Jolene is sent off for active duty in Iraq to fly helicopters. Home front could refer to both how Michael has to juggle work and caring for their two daughters while Jolene is away in the first part of the book as well as how Jolene has to adjust to being home after the war during the second part of the book. If you have enjoyed Kristin Hannah’s past novels like, ‘Firefly Lane,’ and, ‘Night Road,’ then you will most likely enjoy this one as well.

Teens - Pick of the Week

Cover Art
Freefall - Anna Levine
ISBN: 0061576549
Freefall was an interesting read because it is set in a place that I don't generally read much about - Modern Israel. It is essentially a coming of age story as the main character, Aggie, struggles to join an elite combat unit despite the fact that she is not physically the type who generally does so. Through her trials, she discovers a lot about her own physical strength as well as beginning to identify her personal beliefs. She makes new friends and rounds things out with a sweet romance. As an American reader, I sometimes found that the author used terms that I was not familiar with a couple of times, but overall it was a great immersion into Israeli life.

Kids - Pick of the Week

Cover Art
Daddy Cuddles - Anne Gutman; Georg Hallensleben
It's hard to find a board book that features a dad instead of a mom. Even the books on "generic" subjects, with no hint of mom in the title, will work in a sneaky mom mention when someone is "getting a kiss from mama" or "mommy makes a big bowl of your oatmeal." She's everywhere! If you want a dad book, you have to seek it out intentionally which is what I was doing when I came across Daddy Cuddles.

Each two-page spread of this book features a different daddy/baby animal pairing cuddling in the way that is particular to that species. Daddy tiger is giving a headbutt to his cub, daddy monkey is swinging his baby around on his back, etc. The illustrations are simple, with clear depictions of the animals and plain, bold background colors. It's a crowd favorite in my house because every page involves making a new animal sound together, and the final page "just like my daddy cuddles me!" involves a cuddle attack between both parties.

Highly recommended for the daddy/baby pairing in your life!
